Testimonials

It was great to see our students exercising in a fun way while at the same time learning about muscle groups, nutrition, self-esteem, sleep, healthy weight, and all the other topics that were covered! – Eric Bethel 4th grade teacher Marie Reed Learning Center

Tanya and Lance coming in and teaching the Teen Health Promoters about the muscular and skeletal system was a great addition to our body systems lessons.  Having their professional knowledge as personal trainers along with their comfort and ability to relate to my students, was perfect combination.  They were able to explain complex concepts with ease to my students and gave them information and skills applicable not only to the Teen Health Promoters Program and their clinical internship as well as in their daily lives. Lance’s assistance and support of my Senior Teen Health Promoters goal of training for a 5K has been a huge help to us.  He brought so much energy to our training session and was so detail oriented in planning our training schedule.  The Senior Teen Health Promoters are excited to start training and we could not have done it without Lance’s help.   –Allison Bayley, Latin American Youth Center

Learning how to eat healthy snacks and drink more water has made me feel better with more energy. I got my mom to buy carrots and hummus for our family. –Joseph, Marie Reed Learning Center Summer School

FACT: The District has the HIGHEST rate of overweight children (ages 10 to 17) in the nation at 22.8%.

CALL TO ACTION: 61% of obese young people have at least one additional risk factor for heart disease. Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese and developing related diseases. Starting early by training youth is THE key to developing a lifetime of healthier living!

DC OFFICE OF THE STATE SUPERINTENENT OF EDUCATION: PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS: According to the OSSE Physical Activity Standards which “encourage all LEA’s and schools to set a goal to provide quality physical education instruction that is at least 150 minutes per week (30 minutes per day) at the elementary level and 225 minutes (45 minutes per day) in middle and high school levels”. The current public health agenda of our country calls for school physical education and health education to be priorities in disease prevention.  The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Association for State Boards of Education (NASBE) all recommend daily physical education as stated above (OSSE Physical Education Standards, p 5).

OUR PROGRAMS

Our services are designed to provide an impact in the lives of youth through three main areas: community building, research, and education.  Through our community building we highly encourage parents to attend sessions.  We also provide educational lectures for parents as a part of our program.  Supporting materials for the family are sent home with each student on a weekly basis.  We are also committed to gathering pre and post data on all students to be used for research purposes.  During our program we encourage the school nurse, physical education teacher, and others to observe our sessions so that they can support the students with their journey.

GOALS OF OUR PROGRAMMING

1. To offer both summer school programming and after-school programs this upcoming year in four to six schools.

The after school program, summer school program, or recess program is designed to bring a cohesive learning environment for all students. IWF sends expert trainers in to lead each class with the assistance of on-site teachers.

Each week is built as a building block upon the previous week’s program.  Each week the program is progressed and changed based off the student’s adaptation to the program.

Train the student: Program is adaptable to the schools needs but it is recommended to do the following: 45-60-minutes 3-4x/week; 90-minutes 2x/week; or 30-minutes 5x/week

Equipment: Equipment will be purchased for the school by IWF to use in order to implement the program.  School will own all fitness equipment at the end of the program.

Healthy Foods: Weekly healthy snacks will be provided by IWF

Other Take home Items: IWF will provide each student in the class with a water bottle, informative handouts, workout journals, booklets, and other educational tools.

  1. In order to hold the PE teachers accountable to delivery our curriculum one of the Co-Founders of IWF will visit and co-lead a class 2x/week every six weeks and spend an additional two hours reviewing the next upcoming weeks of curriculum.

Materials: IWF provides on-sight nurse, PE teacher with materials to implement a year’s worth or curriculum.  A year curriculum workbook and resource guide is given to the teacher.
